West Virginia isn’t called the Mountain State for nothing. Around nearly every bend in the road, there’s a view worth pulling over for, but some overlooks go far beyond “scenic.” They stop you in your tracks. They make you stay a little longer. And they remind you why this region is one of the East Coast’s best-kept secrets.

If you’re searching for unforgettable vistas, these three overlooks in and around Berkeley Springs deliver big rewards and surprising accessibility.

1. Prospect Peak and Panorama Overlook

Prospect Peak and Panorama Overlook

Perched high above the Potomac River Valley near Great Cacapon, Prospect Peak is one of the most breathtaking and historically significant overlooks in the state.

This isn’t just another scenic pull-off. Prospect Peak overlooks both the Potomac and Cacapon River Valleys and offers views into three states: West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. National Geographic once rated this view among America’s outstanding beauty spots.  Standing here, you’ll see why.  At nearly 1,000 feet above the Potomac River, the perspective is both expansive and humbling.

Unlike many overlooks, Prospect Peak is incredibly easy to access. Located along WV Route 9, it’s just a short drive from Berkeley Springs with a convenient roadside turnout, no hiking required.  It is fully handicap assessable.

Sunset is the moment. As the light fades over the Potomac River, the sky reflects off the water below, creating one of the most underrated golden hour views in the Mid-Atlantic.  Panorama Public House offers dining and ice cream with this incredible view

2. Cacapon Overlook: A Hidden Gem Above the Valley

Cacapon Mountain Overlook and the Almost Heaven Swing

If the view of three states is not enough then the Cacapon Overlook is for you!  This rewarding viewpoint within Cacapon Resort State Park has sweeping views of four states, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, and is one of the highest points in the whole county!

This overlook provides a different perspective, looking out over rolling hills, farmland, and dense forest below. You can drive, hike, or bike to the peak.  Take part in the West Virginia SWINGO and have a seat on the artfully crafted Almost Heaven Swing.

Accessible by hiking trails within the park, the journey to Cacapon Overlook winds through hardwood forest and offers plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife along the way.

Visit in the late afternoon when the golden hour light softens the landscape and adds depth to the valley views.

3. The Paw Paw Bends via The Paw Paw Tunnel Hill Trail

The Paw Paw Bends via the Paw Paw Hill Trail

For a view that combines natural beauty with fascinating history, the overlook above the Paw Paw Tunnel is hard to beat. This iconic landmark along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park offers a unique hiking experience that rewards you with both scenery and story.

This 3.7 mile trail brings you over 700 feet above the tunnel where you’re treated to a dramatic view of the Potomac River bending through the mountains.  The hike begins along the C&O Canal towpath and ascends via a series of switchbacks to the ridge above the tunnel. It’s a moderately challenging climb, but the payoff is well worth the effort.

Wear sturdy shoes—the trail can be rocky and steep in sections. Also, bring a flashlight if you plan to walk through the tunnel itself—it’s over 3,000 feet long and completely dark inside.

Plan Your West Virginia Overlook Adventure

Whether you’re chasing fall colors, planning a summer hike, or just looking for a peaceful escape, these overlooks deliver unforgettable moments in every season. Pack your hiking boots, bring your camera, and your dog and get ready to see West Virginia from a whole new perspective.

Because sometimes, the best way to appreciate the Mountain State… is from above.
