Philadelphia may have been where America found its voice, but Berkeley Springs is where it found its breath.

Less than three hours from Center City, tucked into the Appalachian Mountains, is a town where wellness is a tradition that’s been flowing naturally for centuries. Native peoples referred to the land as “Ka’ Kah Pon” meaning Medicine Waters.  Today, the mountain above the springs is named “Cacapon.” George Washington became one of Berkeley Springs’ earliest and most devoted visitors during colonial times, and in 1776 The Town of Bath was established as The Trustees of The Berkeley Springs.  In 1976, The Springs were added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Why Visit Berkeley Springs?

Set among the foothills of the rolling Alleghanies, the springs offers chance to experience wellness in its most authentic form. Since 2023, Berkeley Springs State Park has earned a place among USA TODAY’s Top 10 Hot Springs in the United States three out of the last four years, claiming first place once.  The park was also placed as the highest-ranked hot spring East of Colorado all three years.

Unlike the volcanically powered, geothermal hot springs of the American West, our healing mineral water rises naturally from the earth at a constant 74.3°F, creating a refreshing, year-round spring that has drawn visitors for centuries.  The unique temperature allows for a refreshing cool dip in the summer and a slight warmth in the winter.   For an affordable experience more typical of true hot springs you can take an affordable soak in the historic Roman Bathhouse, heated 102°F just feet away from the natural springs.

But the real magic of Berkeley Springs is found in experiencing it yourself.  Some say a unique mixture of Native American tradition and Appalachian lore toys with healing mineral waters at the base of a mountain filled with quartz, creating a feeling of a sixth sense. In reality, the five natural senses tell it best.  Seeing sunsets with overlooks that go for miles, hearing relaxing forest sounds, smelling cool Appalachian air, tasting water drawn from deep within the earth, and feeling the warmth of a welcoming small town.
