A Journey Through History and Mountain Flavor

Every June 20, West Virginians celebrate the birth of the Mountain State, commemorating the day in 1863 when West Virginia became the nation’s 35th state. 163 years ago, a new state was born out of the struggle of the Civil War, it is an important part of our nation’s 250 year history.  There may be no better place to celebrate West Virginia Day than Berkeley Springs, (also celebrating it’s 250 year anniversary) where centuries of American history, Appalachian culture, and small-town charm come together in one unforgettable destination.

Spend the Day Where History Was Made

Begin your West Virginia Day adventure by exploring Berkeley Springs’ rich historical landscape. The town sits along the famed Washington Heritage Trail, a 136-mile National Scenic Byway that follows the footsteps of George Washington through West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle. Long before he became America’s first president, Washington visited the warm mineral springs that made Berkeley Springs famous and helped establish the area’s reputation as a destination for wellness and recreation.

A stroll through Berkeley Springs State Park and downtown Bath reveals layers of American history spanning from the colonial era through the Civil War and beyond. The Washington Heritage Trail connects visitors to historic sites, scenic overlooks, and landmarks that tell the story of the nation’s frontier and the state’s earliest beginnings.

West Virginia was born during the Civil War, making WV Day the perfect opportunity to explore Morgan County’s Civil War Trail sites. Throughout Berkeley Springs and the surrounding countryside, interpretive markers tell stories of divided loyalties, military occupations, and the strategic importance of the region during the conflict.

History enthusiasts can visit sites associated with troop movements, local skirmishes, and notable figures connected to the war. The Civil War Trails network offers a fascinating look at the events that shaped both Morgan County and the future State of West Virginia. Even today, visitors continue to discover the area’s deep Civil War connections through historic markers and preserved sites.
